Why You’ll Love This Oat Milk Recipe

Homemade always wins on quality, price, and taste. This homemade Oat Milk Recipe 🥛 is no exception. You get silky-smooth oat milk with zero slime and you’re in charge of the sweetness and thickness. One batch makes about 3 cups , which is plenty to last a few days. Use it in your coffee ☕, oatmeal or overnight oats, your baked goods, your smoothies, and so much more.

Ingredients

🌾 Rolled oats: You want old-fashioned rolled oats here. Quick oats can get gloopy, and steel-cut won’t blend smoothly. Grab certified gluten-free if needed.

🧊 Freezing cold water: The colder, the better. Ice-cold water helps keep the texture silky, not slimy.

🍁 Sweetener of choice: Add a little for a gentle sweetness, then adjust to taste. You can use maple syrup, date syrup, honey, or agave.

🧂 Salt: Just a pinch to wake all the flavors up.

Nonna’s Tip 🥛

Blend for 25 to 30 seconds maximum. Over-blending can result in gummy milk.

Variations and Substitutions for This Oat Milk Recipe

  1. Add additional flavors with a splash of vanilla extract, a pinch of cinnamon, or even a bit of cocoa powder.
  2. Use your favorite sweeteners, such as 🍯 honey or agave syrup.

What to Do with Leftover Oat Pulp

Don’t toss the leftover oats (oat pulp). There are several ways you can use it so nothing goes to waste.

  • Pancakes or waffles: Stir some oat pulp into your pancake or waffle batter for extra fiber.
  • Smoothies: Blend a couple tablespoons into any smoothie for creaminess without dairy.
  • Muffins: Fold into banana bread or muffin batter.

Common Questions

how do I avoid gummy or a slimy texture?

My trick to avoiding slimy/gummy oat milk is to only blend for 25 to 30 seconds MAX. If you over-blend it, it will become gummy. Also, using ice-cold water will help!

what type of oats should I use to make Oat milk?

Rolled oats are absolutely the best choice to make homemade oat milk. Steel-cut or quick cook oats will simply not give you the right texture.

how long will the oat milk last in the fridge?

This recipe will last about 3-5 days in a mason jar in the fridge. It will separate, which is totally fine, just give it a shake before using.

how do you strain the oat milk properly?

I like to use a nut milk bag or cheesecloth over a large mixing bowl and then very gently squeeze the oat milk mixture through it. I like to pass it through 1-2 times for best results.

is oat milk good for you?

Yes it can be for sure! Unsweetened oat milk can be a healthy choice for most adults. It’s naturally lactose-free and nut-free, and oats are linked with heart benefits like lowering bad cholesterol.

is oat milk gluten free?

Oats are naturally gluten-free, but aren’t usually guaranteed due to cross-contamination. For celiac, make sure to get certified gluten-free oats.

Almond milk vs oat milk — which is better?

Almond milk has a light, nutty taste while oat milk has a creamy, lightly sweet taste. Almonds have to be soaked first while oats should not be soaked.

A glass of oat milk is being poured, with a metal straw inside. Some oats are scattered on the surface nearby, and a light cloth is in the background.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup organic rolled oats
  • 3 cups freezing cold filtered water, more or less depending on how thick/thin you prefer the oat milk
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup, date syrup, or whichever sweetener you prefer
  • pinch salt

Instructions

  • Blend all of the ingredients in a blender, ensuring that the water is very cold. Blend for a maximum of 25 to 30 seconds. Avoid over-blending as this can result in a gummy texture.
  • You can use any sweetener of choice and adjust the water according to how thick or thin you like your milk.
  • Gently strain it through a nut milk bag or a cheese cloth and store in a mason jar in your refrigerator.
  • Shake well before each use as it separates. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Oats matter: Use old-fashioned rolled oats. Quick oats can turn gummy, and steel-cut won’t blend smooth.
  • Go ice-cold: Use freezing cold, filtered water. Cold temps = silky texture.
  • Blend briefly: 25–30 seconds max. Overblending releases extra starch and can make it gloopy.
  • Strain smart: Use a nut-milk bag or cheesecloth and gently squeeze. Going Hulk-mode can push starch through and affect texture.
  • Separation is normal: Shake well before each pour.
  • Storage: Refrigerate in a sealed jar for up to 3–5 days.
  • Troubleshooting: If you ever notice slime, go colder, blend shorter, and strain twice.
