Why You’ll Love this hack for How to Cut Deviled Eggs

This hack for How to Cut Deviled Eggs is so simple yet genius, you won’t believe you didn’t think of it yourself 💡. All you need is a sharp knife and a simple rolling technique and you’re golden 🔪. If you love deviled eggs like I do, you will never struggle to get a beautifully intact egg white shell again. It couldn’t be simpler, more effective, or fun to make deviled eggs!

How to Prepare

🥚 Place a hard-boiled egg on the surface of your cutting board.

🔪 Now, take a sharp chef’s knife and, starting from the handle end of the knife (where the blade is often broadest and most stable), insert the knife into the top center of the egg.

🌀 Gently roll the egg until it cuts all the way around, keeping the knife just at the surface of the egg white, so it doesn’t cut all the way through.

👩‍🍳 Now, you should be able to gently separate the egg white halves from the perfectly intact yolk.

Nonna’s Tip 🔪

Make sure to keep the edge of the knife just at the surface of the egg so it doesn’t cut all the way through.

  4. Make spicy deviled eggs by mixing in your favorite hot sauce or chili powder to the mashed yolk mix. My favorites include Tajin seasoning, fiery Calabiran chili paste, or Gochugaru chili oil 🥵.
  5. Take your deviled eggs to the next level with some excellent garnishes. Some topping ideas include vibrant pink Pickled Onions, a dash of everything bagel seasoning, or an olive 🫒.

Common Questions

How do I hard boil an egg properly?

Here’s my failproof tutorial for boiling eggs perfectly every time: Boiling and Peeling Eggs Perfectly.

What should I do if the egg white sticks to the yolk?

If the egg white sticks to the yolk while cutting, it could be due to the yolk being slightly overcooked. Next time you try this hack for How to Cut Deviled Eggs, try reducing the boiling time by a minute for a softer yolk, which may separate more easily.

Can I use this technique for soft-boiled eggs?

This technique is best for hard-boiled eggs since the yolk is firm. Soft-boiled eggs have a runny yolk that would not remain intact when separated

What knife should I use for this technique?

A sharp chef’s knife with a thin blade is ideal for this technique. Ensure the knife is sharp to make a clean cut without squashing the egg.

Can i make these ahead of time?

Certainly, you can make these ahead of time. If you’re storing the halved eggs, store the yolks and egg whites, store them separately in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Fully assembled deviled eggs can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days before serving.

Should i cut the eggs lengthwise or crosswise?

The eggs are cut crosswise (around the equator), not lengthwise. This method gives the deviled eggs a more elegant, upright presentation—like little egg “cups.”
