Key Lime Pie… in a smoothie 🍋🥧!? With all healthy, guilt-free ingredients, a solid dose of protein, and just 300 calories per serving?! EXCUSE ME, WHAT 🤯!? That was my exact reaction when I first blended up this masterpiece. Trust me—this smoothie is EVERYTHING.

So, picture this: My best friend texts me, hyped that she made a smoothie that tastes exactly like key lime pie. Now, I had zero hesitation trying this recipe because:
a) That girl is a food fanatic, and if she says it tastes like key lime pie, it TASTES like key lime pie.
b) If I can make something healthy taste like dessert, why on earth would I say no?!

Naturally, I got to work 🧑‍🍳. I took her recipe, added some TMN tweaks, adjusted the protein and calorie balance, and BOOM 💥—the result? The most key lime pie-tasting key lime pie smoothie that will soon become your new fixation.

Why You’ll Love Key Lime Pie Smoothie

Naturally sweet banana 🍌 and pineapple 🍍 play well with tart key limes, super greens, and a flavorful scoop of vanilla protein powder for a healthy take on key lime pie. Cool, tangy, and creamy, this smoothie 🧋 recipe uses only one dish and takes 30-seconds to make. Simply add all ingredients to a blender, and moments later you have a guilt-free indulgence reminiscent of a tropical island 🏝️.

How to Prepare

🍍 To a powerful blender, add coconut water, banana, and pineapple.

💚 Next, add lime and vanilla protein powder.

🥬 Add a handful spinach and a dash of cinnamon and turmeric. Blend for 30 seconds, and enjoy!

Nonna’s Tip 🧋

This healthy smoothie doesn’t have any added sugar since it gets its sweetness from banana 🍌 and pineapple 🍍. If you prefer it a bit sweeter, try adding a spoonful of vanilla Greek yogurt. Bonus: you get added creaminess, too!

Variations and Substitutions for Key Lime Pie Smoothie

  1. Got kale 🥬? You can swap the spinach for a handful of these powerhouse greens.
  2. A generous spoonful of vanilla Greek 🇬🇷 yogurt will add a bit of creaminess and sweetness to this smoothie.
  3. Add a little bit of monk fruit to taste for additional sweetness.
  4. Garnish this smoothie with fresh mint 🌱 and a lime wedge for a tangy hint of flavor.

Key Lime Pie Smoothie Secrets to Perfect Results

For perfectly tangy, sweet, and creamy results, follow these secrets to success:

  • Key limes (named after the Florida Keys 🏝️ where they were first cultivated) are distinctively rounder, thin skinned, and much smaller than Persian limes – about the size of a golf ball. They’re tart but slightly less acidic compared to their Persian cousins. The fruit is aromatic and possesses a slightly floral 🌺 flavor. If you can find authentic Key limes, use two of them! Otherwise, Persian limes will work fine.
  • Reserve a bit of the coconut water in case your blender needs a boost 💪. If your mixture gets too thick, add a splash of coconut water 🥥 at a time to get things flowing again.
  • A huge part of this smoothie’s key lime flavor comes from blending the limes with the peel on 🍋! Don’t be shy—toss those limes in whole! You won’t taste the rind, but you will get that extra punch of tartness that gives this smoothie its incredible favor.

Common Questions

Can I use fresh fruit instead of frozen?

You can, but it will alter the texture of the smoothie and you may have to add ice cubes. Frozen banana and pineapple are recommended to give this smoothie its thick texture.

Can I use kale instead of spinach?

Absolutely! Spinach has a milder flavor, but both work well in this recipe and add a ton of nutrients.

Can I add sweetener to this smoothie?

Yes, you can add monk fruit to your desired level of sweetness. Monk fruit is a healthy alternative to sugar, and is mild enough not to overpower the key lime flavor of the smoothie.

How can I make this creamier?

Adding a generous spoonful of vanilla Greek yogurt will give this smoothie a bit of sweetness and make the texture more creamy.

My smoothie is too thick and won’t blend. What do I do?

While the blender is running, pour a splash of coconut water in the liquid spout a little at a time to dilute the ingredients so they can blend well. You may have to turn off your blender, stir, and blend again.

Can I make this ahead of time?

It’s always best to drink this smoothie immediately, as it will separate if it sits too long. You can measure and prep your ingredients ahead of time if you like, then it only takes 30-seconds to blend!

I wanted to love this, but the peel on the lime is leaving the worst bitter aftertaste. I must try again without the peel.. maybe a teaspoon of honey would have fixed it? I will try again 😊 Anyone else have this issue?

    1. HI Sheena, oh nooooo I wonder if it over blended as that can happen. Here’s what I would do if I were you so that you have the most perfect results: add in the zest and juice only (to taste) instead of the peel. Please try again and report back

Native Floridian enters the chat! 🙋‍♀️ While nothing will ever take the place of our beloved state pie, this smoothie gets my approval! Disclaimer: I have never finished a whole piece of Key lime pie because it’s just too rich and sweet to eat in one sitting. This smoothie is such a nice, healthy alternative without all the added sugar!
