If you’ve read my bio or watched my stories, you already know—I’m a loud and proud Bulgarian immigrant 🇧🇬, and I love giving Bulgarian Recipes the hype they deserve. Yes, I live in Canada now 🇨🇦—which, honestly, is the perfect place to be loud and proud about your culture because it’s so multicultural —but I was born in Bulgaria, to two very Bulgarian Bulgarians 👩❤️👨, and spent most of my childhood there running wild and eating Banitsa.
Why Say It Simple When You Can Say It the Bulgarian Way?
But, seriously, I love my people 💕. You know how every culture has its own little proverbs and metaphors? Well, ours are absolute Slavic-style sassy poetry 🤣.
We don’t say “Slow down”… Instead, we say: “Petko isn’t born yet, but they’re already sewing him a hat” 🧢 (Още Петко нероден, а шапката му шият).
We don’t say “Don’t mock others”… We say: “The skinny guy laughed at the one without teeth” 😬 (Присмял се хърбел на щърбел).
And instead of “It’s too late”… We go with: “You put your hood on after the rain” ☔ (След дъжд – качулка).
Iconic, right? I could go on forever, but you get the idea—we’re witty, we’re charming, and our food slaps 👋.
Bulgarian Recipes That Bring You Home
If you moved abroad in your early teens, you get it. We’ve spent most of our lives away from the motherland. However, we’ve spent just enough time back home to always keep a piece of it with us.
For me, the ultimate way to stay connected is through food. I grew up watching my mom and both my grandmas cook like actual queens in the kitchen. They’re the reason I get to share authentic Bulgarian recipes with you today—just like the ones below 👇!
My Top Easy Bulgarian Recipes
From soups to stuffed peppers to custardy desserts 🍮—this list is packed with my all-timefave easy Bulgarian recipes that have been lovingly passed down through generations (aka, straight from my Bapche 👵). These dishes help me stay forever connected to my roots 🇧🇬—and trust me, once you try them, you’ll be hooked too!
Now, remember… I’m the MODERN Nonna 💅. This means I’ve modernized some of these to keep things a bit healthier and less time-consuming. But don’t worry—each recipe still brings that authentic “back-home” taste like you’re sitting at Bapche’s kitchen table discussing her life-long feud with Ivanka, the next-door neighbour 🤣.
Sweet Easter Bread
Sweet Easter Bread is so nostalgic for me: it symbolizes tradition, family, love, and my childhood. This recipe is very easy, comes together with minimal hands-on work, and yields TWO fluffy, tender, sweet bread loaves.
This might be the healthiest cream of hidden veggie soup you’ve ever had! When mom and dad taught me how to make the healthiest creamy soups without the heavy cream, I just never looked back.
There's nothing more comforting than my mom's homemade Bulgarian Potato Meatballs. The meat is so tender, and by using grated potatoes instead of breadcrumbs, these are light but super juicy and naturally gluten-free! We love scaling up this recipe to make a huge batch.
If you're a fan of yogurt, or you're the type who could eat a tub of Tzatziki with a spoon (no judgment 😅🥄), then you’re gonna fall in love with this fresh and easyBulgarian Salad.
This soup is simply made with a few fresh ingredients: chicken, onion, celery, carrot, garlic, and parsley. It’s healthy and comforting and the perfect meal if you’re feeling a bit under the weather.
This heartwarming bowl of goodness 🥣 brings together the earthy vibes of fresh spinach 🌿 and a rich, creamy broth that’s basically a warm hug in soup form. It’s comforting, nutritious, and has been loved for generations!
When the weather starts to cool down and you're craving a hearty, delicious meal, this Baked Beans and Pork Chops dish is perfect. The pork chops are tender and juicy, and the beans are creamy and delicate. I appreciate the simple seasoning, which packs a big flavor punch.
This Bulgarian Spanakopita Toast is a classic in my family, and I think it will be in yours too. It makes a plain toast 🍞 breakfast or lunch absolutely shine – full of flavor, creaminess, and cheesy goodness. The spinach is bright and nutritious and the eggs make this substantial.
If you're hunting for the best stuffed recipe out there, congrats—you’ve officially found it 🎯🌶️. This legendary Bulgarian Stuffed Pepper recipe has been in my family for generations.
This Watermelon Feta Salad is so refreshing and light. Each bite contains creaminess from the feta, a little kick from the hot honey, sweetness from the watermelon, and zestiness from the lime juice.
These Bulgarian Meat and Cheese Sandwiches – aka the iconic “Prinzesi” 🥪🇧🇬 – are the definition of comfort food. They're crispy, cheesy, a little meaty, and packed with pure nostalgia.
This Bean Stew is the perfect vegetarian-friendly dish that tastes like you’ve been simmering it all day—but nope, you did that in half an episode of your favorite show 📺💅.
This Bulgarian Moussaka with Potatoes is amazingly quick, perfect for a weeknight when you need dinner fast. It's cozy and comforting, full of warming flavors and hearty ingredients.
This is my childhood in a bowl 🥣—straight-up Bulgarian comfort food magic! We call it “supa topcheta” (aka meatball soup royalty 👑), and it's hands-down one of my favorite soups in the world.
You'll love this Semolina Cake (Halva) for its irresistible nutty flavor and unique texture. Toasting the semolina creates an amazing cake that you'll want to make over and over.
These Bulgarian Honey Cookies, also known as Medenki, remind me of my entire childhood in Bulgaria 🇧🇬. Imagine if a honey cookie and gingerbread cookie had a baby, and then we dipped that sweet, soft, chewy cookie baby into melted milk chocolate 🤤!
Nothing hits like coming home to a warm bowl of lentil soup 🥣—healthy, comforting, and packed with feel-good vibes. This one’s been in my family for generations, and it never disappoints!
Shopska Salad is a total Balkan classic 🥗—fresh, vibrant, and basically summer in a bowl. It’s a flavor-packed shoutout to Bulgaria 🇧🇬, and trust me… one bite and you’ll be ready to move there (or at least visit for the salad 😄).
Tarator is a total Bulgarian staple 🥒❄️. You’ll find it on every restaurant menu in Bulgaria once the temps rise. It’s the perfect sidekick to grilled meat, fish, veggies, cevapi (Balkan kebab vibes 👌)—or enjoy it solo on a hot day.
These Mekitsi are a traditional Bulgarian breakfast treat—but let’s be real, they totally double as dessert too 🍩😋. Nothing beats a homemade donut, and these babies are fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and 100% irresistible.
This Custard Cake 🍰—aka “Biskvitena Torta” is proof that dessert doesn’t have to be complicated to be amazing. Just 15 minutes of prep, a few pantry staples, and you've got a creamy, dreamy, no-fuss treat that tastes like Bapche whipped it up.
Shout out to the grandmas with life-long next-door neighbor feuds! 🙌🤣 I just love how food has the power to transcend culture and show us that deep down we really are all the same! 🤣🥰 I can’t wait to try out some of these sayings and confuse my kids! 🤣 And the mekitsi looks a lot like beignets! I’m a sucker for any type of powdered doughnut, so this is happening!😋🫶🏼
Thanks
Meeting a Bulgar Client tomorrow.
