The ripe mashed bananas ๐ŸŒ deliver that perfect level of natural sweetness, which is only accentuated by the cinnamon sugar dusting. The banana also adds moisture, resulting in a soft and moist texture, while the self-rising flour gives these banana donuts their distinct chewiness. How to Prepare

๐ŸŒ In a bowl, mash the ripe banana. Add the flour and mix with a spatula or fork.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Once the dough becomes crumbly, then begin using your hands to create a smooth dough. Mix just until a ball forms. (Do not overmix.)

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿณ Divide the dough into 7 equal pieces. Lightly oil your hands and roll each piece of dough into a ball.

โ™จ๏ธ Spray the basket of an air fryer with non-stick cooking spray. Arrange the donut holes in the basket, making sure they are not touching each other. Then, cook in a 350F (177C) air fryer for 6 minutes.

๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ Carefully remove the donuts from the air fryer. Next, lightly brush with the remaining oil and then roll in cinnamon sugar.

The amount of flour you add will depend on the size of the banana, and the sweetness will vary based on the ripeness of the banana (the riper, the better). I used one medium, ripe banana for this recipe.

Variations and Substitutions for Banana Donut Holes

  1. Add a teaspoon of vanilla or almond extract to the batter for a hint of flavor.
  2. Instead of cinnamon sugar, try drizzling the cooked donuts in melted chocolate. ๐Ÿซ
  3. Feel free to add a pinch of salt and/or sugar directly to the batter for a dash of salty or sweet flavor.

What is self-rising flour and what if i can’t find it?

Self-rising flour is all-purpose flour that contains baking powder and salt. If you can’t find it, you can use 3/4 cup all-purpose flour instead and add 1 teaspoon baking powder and 1/8 teaspoon salt.

what if i don’t have an air fryer?

You can also deep- or shallow-fry these in a neutral oil with a high smoke point. My preference is avocado oil. Fry until golden brown and crispy all over, about 2 minutes per side. Baking won’t yield the same crispiness, but you can place the dough in the individual wells of a greased muffin tin and bake at 350F for 15 minutes.

can i make my own cinnamon sugar?

Certainly, just combine equal parts ground cinnamon and granulated sugar. Brown sugar works too. You only need about 1/4 cup for this recipe, but cinnamon sugar will last for years in a tightly sealed container.

Can these be made ahead of time?

These are best enjoyed warm, straight from the air fryer. They are not as tasty when reheated.

How large should the banana be?

You want approximately 1/2 cup of mashed banana. The banana must be ripe. I used 1 medium banana.

Ingredients 

  • 1 banana, ripe
  • ยพ cup self rising flour, 95 grams
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil, or coconut oil
  • cinnamon sugar, granulated sugar + cinnamon to taste
  • non-stick cooking spray, such as avocado oil

  1. I loved the idea of this recipe, perfect way to use up a banana. Iโ€™ve made this twice now but mine were dense both times instead of light and fluffy. I donโ€™t know what Iโ€™m doing wrong ๐Ÿ™ both times my dough was quite wet so the second time round I added more flour but they still turned out quite heavy/dense. Still loved eating them though, they tasted nice just not sure the texture was right.

    1. Hi Aleena, thank you for the feedback, I do think in your case adding a bit less flour could be beneficial. These are only two ingredients so they will be less fluffy than your traditional baked goods BUT you can experiment and make them lighter if you add some baking powder to the flour. Hope that helps ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I loved this idea, but, mine turned out heavy & stodgey.
    I believe my banana was not the same size as yours and therefore had a different outcome. What was the weight of your banana?
    Incidentally, I was sure not to overwork the dough, so that was not the problem. My dough was a gooey & and definitely not crumbly…๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

    1. Hi Cass, the dough should not be gooey. Instead of measuring a precise banana weight, I recommend adding a bit more flour next time until you get a less gooey consistency. Thanks for giving this recipe a chance!
