Onion rings 🧅 are iconic for a reason— that crispy, crunchy exterior hugging a tender, slightly sweet center? Yeahhh, it’s a dangerously delicious combo 😍. As a certified onion enthusiast (seriously, I throw onions into everything I cook), you’d think I’d be all over onion rings. But nope—thanks to my fitness goals, I’ve kept my distance 😢.

Then BAM— I saw this viral low-carb onion ring “chips” version blowing up the internet, and I KNEW this was my moment. The flavor of onion rings, but in chip form? AND low-carb?!? I mean, c’monnnn… the low-carb crew understood the assignment with this one 👏👏.

They’re quick, easy, and packed with flavor—a crispy, savory, oniony dream that lets you snack guilt-free (aka, you won’t feel like you ate a week’s worth of calories in one meal 😅). This viral sensation is 5000/10 and absolutely worth the hype.

Why You’ll Love Onion Ring Chips

Onion rings in chip form without the deep fried guilt? Yes, please! 🙋‍♀️ Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, these viral onion ring chips are the answer to your traditional onion ring cravings. Savory onions 🧅 are sliced thin 🔪 and baked to golden-brown perfection on a bed of salty Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. When it cools, the cheese creates a crispy, crunchy coating that’s good until the last bite 😁. Bold Greek seasoning packs on the flavor, making onion ring chips the perfect companion to my creamy, cool tzatziki.

How to Prepare

⏲️ Preheat the oven to 400F (200C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper

🔪 Slice the onions into rings with a knife or use a mandoline. Then, add an even layer of cheese to the baking sheet followed by the onion slices.

🧅 Make sure you arrange each onion right next to each other.

🫒 Drizzle a tiny bit of olive oil onto each one and sprinkle with Greek seasoning.

👩‍🍳 Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden! Let them cool for 10 minutes. Enjoy with sour cream, a cilantro lime crema, French onion dip, or my homemade tzatziki recipe!

Nonna’s Tip 🧅

After the onions are out of the oven, let them cool with the cheese before peeling them off the sheet.

The edges are golden brown, and visible seasoning includes black pepper. A soft-focus background with warm, glowing lights adds a cozy ambiance.

Onion Rings Chips Tips for Success

How DO you get those perfectly sliced onions? What special equipment is needed? Are onion ring chips really that crispy? Answers to this and more below 🙌!

  • The Perfect Slice: To achieve OCD-level perfectly sliced onion rings, you either need a really sharp knife and some serious skills or a mandoline. Mandolines are SUPER sharp and you can set it to your preferred thickness – or in this case thin-ness.
  • Cut the Cheese: This recipe works best with shredded Parmigiano Reggiano covering the bottom of the baking sheet. The cheese is what ultimately gives this recipe its texture and helps the onion rings hold their shape.
  • Line Up: To achieve that crispy texture, you don’t want to overcrowd your baking sheet with the onions. Line them up so that the sides are touching, but do not stack or overlap.
  • Let it Cool: You want to let these onion ring chips cool completely before digging in. When it comes out of the oven, the cheese will be warm and melty. It will harden as it cools and you’ll have that crispy chip texture you came here for.

Common Questions

How do you get perfectly sliced onions?

Generally, I use this mandoline! It’s razor sharp for thin, even slices every time!

What kind of onions should I use?

Sweet onions balance out the saltiness of the Parmigiano Reggiano. You can also use yellow onions or any variety you prefer!

Can I cook this in my air fryer?

I tested this recipe in the oven, so you may have to adjust the cooking time. However, feel free to experiment and let me know how it turns out in the comments!

How do I store the leftovers?

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

How do I reheat these?

Onion ring chips are best enjoyed right away. Reheating them will cause the cheese to melt. It’s best to warm them in the oven or air fryer so they stay crispy.
