This Oreo affogato loves to play with contrast 🔥🧊. It layers cold, creamy ice cream with fine-ground Oreo crumbs before hot espresso ☕️ is poured right into the center. The espresso slowly melts into the ice cream while the surprise cookie center and thick Oreo-coated rim give you chocolatey crunch in every bite 🥄.
It’s simple (made with only 3 ingredients!), has a flair for the drama 💃🏻, and is such a fun twist on a classic Italian dessert 🇮🇹.
Oreo Affogato
Ingredients
- 5 Oreo cookies, enough to fill the center and coat the rim
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
- 1 shot hot espresso
Instructions
- Add the Oreo cookies to a mini food processor. Pulse until the cookies form fine, even crumbs with no large pieces remaining.
- Place a scoop of firm ice cream into the serving cup. Use the back of the spoon to press a deep well into the center, then fill the well with enough Oreo crumbs to create a cookie layer.
- Cover the Oreo center with the second scoop of ice cream, pressing and smoothing it until it is level with the rim of the cup. Create a smaller well in the center of the top layer for the espresso.
- Pour the remaining Oreo crumbs onto a shallow saucer or plate. Working quickly while the ice cream is still firm, gently press the rim into the crumbs.
- Pour the hot espresso into the center well and enjoy immediately.
Nonna’s Notes
- Decaf: For a less-caffeinated version, use your favorite decaf coffee.
- Dairy-free: Use your favorite plant-based ice cream.
- Tip: Use a food processor to finely grind the cookies so they stick better to the ice-cream rim.

Why You’ll Love Oreo Affogato
☕️ The espresso pour IS the drama – Hot espresso flows straight into the center of the cold ice cream, creating the most delicious creamy coffee dessert as it melts.
🟤 Oreos in every layer – Fine cookie crumbs are packed into the middle and pressed all around the ice cream-covered rim.
☝️ It’s made for one – The entire dessert is assembled right in the cup you’ll serve it in = less mess.
👩🍳 It’s a Modern Nonna twist on a classic – This is a playful Oreo spin on traditional Italian affogato, with an extra layer of chocolatey crunch.
What Is Oreo Affogato?
Traditional Italian 🇮🇹 affogato is made by “drowning” gelato or ice cream with hot espresso. This Oreo affogato takes that classic idea and gives it a cookies-and-cream upgrade 💅. An Oreo surprise is hidden in the center of the ice cream, then more crumbs are pressed around the rim before hot espresso is poured over the top.
The result is an over-the-top affogato dessert that somehow manages to combine hot, cold, creamy, and crunchy into one satisfying spoonful 🥄.

Ingredients and Equipment You’ll Need
⚫️ Oreo Cookies: The Oreos are processed until they become very fine crumbs. You’ll use them for both the hidden cookie layer in the center and for coating the ice cream around the rim.
🍨 Ice Cream: Use firm vanilla ice cream so it can hold its shape. Once the hot espresso goes in, it will immediately begin melting, creating that creamy coffee sauce.
☕️ Hot Espresso: The espresso should be hot when you pour it over the ice cream so you get that signature affogato contrast.
🥄 Equipment: You’ll need a mini food processor for the cookies, a small sturdy cup or mug, a shallow plate for dipping crumb-coated rim, an ice cream scoop, and a moka pot (or your favorite coffee maker).
Nonna’s Tip 🌀
Use a food processor to grind the Oreos into a powdery topping. The finer the crumbs, the easier they are to pack into the middle and press onto the ice cream-coated rim.
Tips and Troubleshooting
- The Oreo crumbs won’t stick: Process the Oreos until they have a fine, almost powdery texture. Large chunks won’t coat the ice cream around the rim as well as fine-ground.
- The ice cream is collapsing: Your ice cream may be too soft. Start with firm ice cream, use a small cup that supports the sides, and work quickly while assembling.
- The espresso is flooding the cup: Make sure you create a clear well in the center of the top layer of ice cream and slowly pour the espresso directly into it. Don’t overfill.
- Cover the cookie center: Make the well in the first scoop of ice cream deep enough to hold a layer of Oreo crumbs before covering it completely with the second scoop.
- My affogato became soupy: This Oreo affogato recipe is best enjoyed immediately. The hot espresso is supposed to melt some of the ice cream, but if it sits too long, everything will continue melting.

Serving and Storage
Enjoy Oreo affogato immediately with a spoon, while the espresso ☕️ is still hot and the ice cream is cold enough to hold that beautiful cookie-coated rim.
I don’t recommend storing the assembled dessert. Once the espresso has been poured, it will continue melting the ice cream 🍨 and softening the Oreo crumbs.
If you like, you can crush the Oreo cookies ahead of time and keep the crumbs covered until you’re ready to assemble.
Common Questions
Do I need an espresso machine to make Oreo affogato?
No. This version uses espresso prepared in a moka pot, so you don’t need an espresso machine.
Why does the ice cream need to be firm?
Firm ice cream can hold the hidden Oreo center, the well for the espresso, and the crumb-coated rim long enough to serve the dessert. If the ice cream is too soft, it may start melting before you add the hot espresso.
How finely should I crush the Oreos?
Process the Oreos until you have fine, even crumbs with only tiny granules remaining. Finely ground crumbs stick more evenly to the ice cream around the rim.
Can I make Oreo affogato ahead of time?
You can crush the Oreo cookies ahead of time, but wait to pour the espresso until you are ready to enjoy, as the espresso immediately begins melting the ice cream.
