Would you try this? Truth is, I didn’t grow up eating cereal, I grew up eating this. This is what we call “Popara” which is also known as a poor man’s meal back home in Bulgaria. We have a few different versions of this and it’s something I grew up eating all the time with my family. When you grow up in a country where you are not always as fortunate, you learn how to make due with anything you have on hand. Bread, milk, and butter were always accessible to us and this is what we called comfort food. When I met Steve and his Italian family I actually learned that they have this in Italy as well and it has always been one of his favourite comfort foods as well. I know a lot of my Portuguese friends enjoy this simple dish as well and Im sure so many others do too. Please let me know below where you are from, if you have this in your country, or if you would give it a try. This Sweet Bread with Milk Butter and Sugar recipe is like a delicious bread pudding and I will always associate it as the best comfort food. We have versions of it with water, tea, milk, and I know a lot of people like to add a little bit of espresso as well. As I sit here writing this description I can’t help but tear up because this simple poor man’s meal means so much to me. It symbolizes everything that I am and every sweet memory I have ever had. This upcoming birthday which is April 22 will be my first birthday without both of my grandmothers and I can’t help but get emotional over this as I sit here and envision having a bowl with them as I always did. If you have loved ones whom you have lost and who enjoyed this as well, please have a bowl to honour them.

Notes

This is an amazing way to use up panettone or any sweet bread you have left over.
I have never tried baking this in the oven as we never do but feel free to experiment.
I don’t measure anything so those are approximate measurements above but please feel free to use as much milk, sugar or butter that you like

Thank you so much for posting this. I adopted my teenage daughter from Bulgaria. She came at age 14. I try to keep making traditional foods for her. I hope she loves this one and it brings back good memories for her.
